16 Nov 07 New Solar panels receive “Innovation of the Year award”

Imagine getting solar electricity without the expense and eye sore of standard glass panels. Well a company called “Nanosolar” has invented a way to convert solar light to electricity using just a thin coating of material.  As of now standard silicon based panels cost $3.00 per watt of energy they go on to produce due to the fact silicon is expensive, in short supply and much of it (70%) is wasted during the manufacturing process.

Since the company doesn’t use any silicon in the production of its “PowerSheet” solar cells the cost per watt drops to just 30 cents! The company has built the world’s largest solar panel manufacturing plant in the world. They plan to produce around 430 megawatts worth of solar cells starting next year. Look for these cells to show up on roofs, the tops of tractor trailers or just about anywhere you can you can print on!
